the foundation — chicago 4×4 909 only, no bass, no chords. learn to sit the kick at 122 first. plate on for the room.

the chain · toggle the signal path

chain order is fixed: drive → tape → delay → plate. matches nick's real signal flow.

what's happening
your midi is parsed in your browser. notes are routed through the selected synthesis engine (real circuit models, no samples). offline audio context renders the result. wav file lands in your downloads. nothing leaves your machine.
coming next
multisample instruments — actual recordings of nick's Mother / Wurli / MS-20 / SP-1200 patches from la burbuja, plus FX chain modeling his real signal path (tape · drive · delay · plate) + room IRs (la burbuja · the spacepit).
the story · the technique · the why

this is the lesson that comes before every other lesson. learn to make a 909 kick drum sit at 122 bpm with nothing else going on. if the room doesn't feel like it's moving when those four kicks loop alone, no amount of layers on top will save you. simplicity is the test.

the engine of house is the offbeat open hat. close your eyes and count 1-2-3-4. now imagine the kick on every number, the snare on 2 and 4, and a long open hat on the AND of every count. the hat is what gives house its forward motion — it bridges the gap between kicks, your body tracks the half-beat, your feet stay moving.

clap layered with the snare adds body but it's optional. the kick + offbeat hat alone is enough. frankie knuckles played warehouse sets where these three elements were the only percussion for 16 bars at a time before he'd bring anything else in. patience is the genre.

plate on by default for the room sound — chicago warehouses were big concrete rooms, no acoustic treatment, the reverb tail was part of the music. EMT 140 placeholder for now; real plate IR captures coming once we sample the EMT at la burbuja.

the common mistake

rushing to add layers. give the kick + hat + clap 30 seconds of breathing room before you reach for anything else.
