chain order is fixed: drive → tape → delay → plate. matches nick's real signal flow.

what's happening
your midi is parsed in your browser. notes are routed through the selected synthesis engine (real circuit models, no samples). offline audio context renders the result. wav file lands in your downloads. nothing leaves your machine.
coming next
multisample instruments — actual recordings of nick's Mother / Wurli / MS-20 / SP-1200 patches from la burbuja, plus FX chain modeling his real signal path (tape · drive · delay · plate) + room IRs (la burbuja · the spacepit).
the story · the technique · the why

most people forget that "sexual healing" came out the SAME YEAR as "planet rock" — and it's the OTHER side of what the 808 could do. where bambaataa pushed the kick OFF the beat for syncopation, marvin gaye pulled it BACK to a slow heartbeat. same drum machine, opposite ends of the cultural map.

the lesson is restraint. four bars of marvin's pattern has fewer notes than one bar of planet rock — kick on 1 and 3, clap on 2 and 4, cymbal swell on the 1 of each bar, hi-hat ONLY on the and-of-each-beat (not on the beat itself). that "and" placement is what gives the song its swung pocket — your body lands on every beat unsupported by a hat, then catches the hat on the upswing. it's a feel a real drummer would play, transcribed into a machine.

the cymbal swell on the 1 is the iconic detail. real cymbals on a real drum kit don't sit alone like that; the 808's cymbal is so long-tail that engineer Harvey Mason Jr. used it as basically a pad — a single hit sustains across the whole bar, washing under marvin's vocal. that gave the production its "spacious" quality. every quiet storm record from 1983 onward studied this trick: anita baker, sade, luther vandross, smokey robinson's "cruisin' '82 redux." use the cymbal as a pad, not a percussion accent.

plate on by default — the original was tracked at marvin's belgium studio with an EMT plate on the entire kit bus, which is why the snare and clap feel "in a room" instead of "on a board." no drive — this is the SOFT 808. drive turns it back into electro.

the common mistake

filling the silence. the 808 has 11 voices but marvin used 4. the genre is in the SPACE between hits. add an open hat or a tom roll and you've broken the spell.
