Cabaret Voltaire · The Crackdown era · 1983

MECHANICAL. four-on-the-floor kick (NOT 1+3 — every beat). snare on 2+4. metallic 8th-note hat. cymbal wash on each 1 of every 2 bars. NO swing, NO velocity variation, NO humanization. the machine wins.

The Crackdown era

Cabaret Voltaire · 1983

sheffield, england, 1973-1994. proto-industrial pioneers. used the TR-606 (Roland's cheap bedroom drum machine, 1981) because it was AVAILABLE + UNFASHIONABLE. the 606 was meant for guitarists who needed a click track. cabaret voltaire turned it into the FOUR-ON-THE-FLOOR drum machine of industrial music, then ministry, nine inch nails, and 1000 industrial acts followed.

    the industrial template — TR-606 + drive + delay

TR-606 drums alone. drive on for the saturation that makes 606 sound industrial. delay on for the post-punk echo. these are the only two FX you need.

the tip

the lesson is that MECHANICAL IS THE POINT. cabaret voltaire didn't humanize their drum machine because the GENRE WAS ABOUT THE MACHINE. if a drummer sat in and played the same pattern with human swing, it would stop being industrial and become rock. the lack of humanity is the meaning. apply it: when programming any genre derived from industrial (techno, EBM, gabber), preserve the locked grid. swing is for genres that celebrate human imperfection. industrial celebrates the machine.

the common mistake

adding swing, velocity variation, or laid-back kicks. you've stopped sounding like industrial and started sounding like a band trying to play industrial. also: people pick the 808 or 909 for industrial. they're wrong — cabaret voltaire + early ministry used the 606 specifically because it was the THINNEST, most MECHANICAL-sounding drum machine. its limitations are its genre.
