Spiritual Friendship is the joint project of Gareth Jones — celebrated British producer/engineer behind Depeche Mode, Einstürzende Neubauten, Wire, Mogwai, Erasure, Grizzly Bear, Liars, and Clinic — and Nick Hook, the Calm + Collect founder and hip-hop / electronic producer.
The two met in 2005 when Jones was hired to mix the Men Women & Children record Nick was playing keyboards on. A decade later they finally got in the studio together — three days at theartlab in East London, late 2014, with a no-judgement, psychedelic-adventuring premise.
Released their self-titled debut LP on Calm + Collect in 2016, the percussion-only Drums LP in 2018, the iV EP, and the seven-piece DRONES suite (Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, Crown) on Calllm — a series of long-form drone meditations recorded at Moog Sound Space in Asheville plus completed remotely during the pandemic.
